Jets S Rontez Miles to miss 3-4 months after meniscus surgery
The Jets made a late push to sign veteran safety J.J. Wilcox when it appeared he’d be joining the 49ers on Tuesday and the reason for their interest may be linked to an injury to one of their current players.
So how to square all that? Good question. TEAM PRECEDENTS Both the Rams and the Raiders are among teams that have, as a rule, stayed away from full guarantees of late, citing the NFL’s funding rule ( which I wrote about in March ) that forces teams to put into escrow every fully guaranteed dollar that doesn’t go straight to the player. Recent Rams deals for Andrew Whitworth and the since-traded Alec Ogletree reflect the influence of that rule, as does Derek Carr’s deal with Oakland.
Mitchell missed all of last season because of his knee, and ESPN reported that he hadn’t been spotted on the field during Organized Team Activities. NESN reported that Mitchell was on the field, but only off to the side doing conditioning work, not participating in the full practice.
A 2016 fourth-round pick who showed promise as a rookie, Mitchell’s knee injury seemed to linger longer than the Patriots were expecting in 2017: When they initially put him on injured reserve, there were reports that he could be designated for return later in the season, but that never happened.
Now the Patriots are still waiting for Mitchell to be a full participant. They’ll have to hope he’s good to go when the season starts in three months.
Having people within our practices, within our training camp, right there trying to, not like they’re trying to distract us, but they’re there, Mayfield told Sirius XM. You could worry about it, you could think about it, but if you’re able to focus in, that can be a beneficial thing for us, talking about going into away stadiums and going into environments where you have to focus on doing your job. So I’m looking forward it.
